RISTORANTE & BAR
Martinis
After 26 years, the staff here
knows what makes a great martini bar: a soft, intimate
setting with a 1940ish film noir feel, a great view of the
passing parade, and most importantly a lot of froth on top of
the carefully shaken martinis and cosmopolitans.
“A lot of people come in here just for the sunset,” said one
hip young waiter. “It’s like being in a fishbowl and looking
out at the world swimming around you.”
The eager bartender revealed that 80 percent of his
customers prefer a vodka martini, while only 20 percent like
it made with traditional gin. Whichever is chosen, the result
is always the same.
“We make them really, really cold with a lot of froth on top,”
he said. “They want that froth.”
Then he pointed to the fine print at the bottom of the menu:
“Shaken, not stirred -- all martinis are served up as shaken
unless otherwise requested.”
And if there was any doubt about the little oasis of old-
school sophistication making it in a classic beach town, he
pointed to the Zagat review displayed in the window:
“Everyone who’s anyone in Manhattan Beach can be found
having a night cap of delicious drinks and juicy
eavesdropping at this European feeling “boite.” While the
large picture window overlooking the pier ensures plenty of
eye candy for both patrons and passersby, the cozy and
romantic wine cellar is the perfect place to take someone
you want to impress.” - Paul Teetor
